Development and Application of Sand Control Packer for Heavy Oil Thermal Recovery

Abstract: The heavy oil reservoirs in Bohai Oilfield account for more than 50% of the total. However,the viscosity of the heavy oil itself is high and it is difficult to recover. The usual practice is to inject high temperature and high pressure steam into the wellbore to reduce the viscosity of the heavy oil,which requires minimal heat loss after steam reaches the reservoir. Moreover,the heavy oil reservoir is shallow,the reservoir cementation is loose and sand production is easy,and the high temperature huff and puff aggravates the sand production,conventional packers cannot meet the strict requirements of long-term sealing required for heavy oil thermal recovery. In order to solve this world-class problem in the industry,based on the current situation of heavy oil development and exploitation,through structural design,finite element theory analysis and indoor testing,this paper has successfully developed a heavy oil thermal recovery sand control packer that can withstand eight cycles of cold and hot alternation. The results show that it can meet the demanding performance requirements of heavy oil development and exploitation for thermal recovery long-term sand control tools. At present,the research results have been successfully applied in the field,which is of great significance for the large-scale exploitation of heavy oil fields and the production of 40 million tons in Bohai Oilfield.
